Sources and Support

WWW Shield's home page is http://www.bitrot.de/wwwshield.html. It contains general information derived from the help pages in the distribution, including an up-to-date version history.

The sources are available in ftp://bitrot.de/pub/wwwshield. Compilation requires a C++ compiler. The code is tested on SGI IRIX 6.5 and Linux 2.0.36 only but avoids all the usual portability problems. (Note that the above URL may change in the future; check WWW Shield's home page if it does not work.)

Send bug reports to w4d@bitrot.de. Always include the version number as reported by wwwshield -V, and include the name and version of your operating system and browser, and if applicable the exact URL that caused problems. Patches for problems and new rules of general interest are welcome.

To subscribe to the mailing list to receive announcements of new versions and discussions, send mail to majordomo@bitrot.de with a single line subscribe wwwshield in the body. This list is expected to carry very low volume.

Security

I have tried to make sure that WWW Shield is secure in the sense that it checks its buffers for overflows and does not contain security holes that could cause web pages to gain unauthorized access to your system. However, this is beta software and I have made stupid mistakes before. Never start WWW Shield as root! If you are in a sensitive environment, check with your system administrator before running WWW Shield.

WWW Shield as shipped by me does not send mail or accesses URLs outside your system, or otherwise reports your browsing habits to anyone. URLs in WWW Shield's built-in support pages like this one that lead to other hosts are marked with full http:// or ftp:// paths. I do not collect information on people who access my site (other than the standard server logs), and I make no such information available to third parties. There are no commercial interests involved in WWW Shield development.

Limitations

This is a beta version. I have been using it for seven months now and it works for me, but I do not have the opportunity to test it on other networks and machines.

Copyright

WWW Shield is Copyright (C) 1999 by Thomas Driemeyer. License to copy, publish, and distribute is granted to everyone provided that three conditions are met:

If these conditions are met, you can do whatever you like. The idea is that I would be annoyed if someone else claimed he wrote the thing, and I don't want bugs introduced by others attributed to me. Make as much money with it as you can. Drop me a line, I am curious.

If you put plan on a CD, send me a free copy if your company policy allows it and you want to. (Not obligatory, I just collect trophies.)

There are no implied or expressed warranties for WWW Shield. I do not claim it is good for anything whatsoever, and if you lose your precious data or your pet flamingo dies this is entirely your problem. (This is basically the disclaimer that comes with all software.)
